We Run a Program to Help Homeless Children

It’s called Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) and serves Salem, Derry, and 14 surrounding towns in southern New Hampshire.

The Network, or IHN, provides a safe place for homeless families with children to turn for food, shelter, and social services. Participating congregations of any faith offer guidance, encouragement, overnight stays, and meals, while preserving the dignity of families as they take steps to regain independence.

Why? There is no homeless shelter of any kind in Salem or Derry. There are at least 158 homeless families in Salem, Derry, and 14 surrounding towns in western Rockingham County.

Volunteer! Currently we have a variety of volunteer opportunities. Email Vicki McKinney-Vareschi at vicki.vareschi@familypromisegrc.org.

In autumn 2012, Salem Cable TV’s Susan McLoughlin recorded president Melanie Nesheim, the Reverend David Yasenka of Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church, and board member (at the time) Laura Scott of Windham discussing the need for this program at this link.

To Get Your Church Involved arrange for us to speak to your missions committee or pastor and start the conversation. Email us at familypromisegrc@gmail.com or call 432-0400.

Interesting that a recent NH Union Leader article shows the same number of homeless families in NH this year as last year.

Inspiring NY Times Article on homelessness and some solutions being implemented. Pertinent to our program is this quote, “Homelessness is an extremely adverse childhood experience. ‘If you factor in the reduction of childhood trauma, the savings to society in the long run from prevention is considerable,’ commented Stephen Metraux, associate professor of health policy and public health at University of the Sciences”

New Shelter Coming for Families It’s not local to us, but is still a step in the right direction...
